Visit the Handa Gallery – upstairs in Wells Maltings – from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 October to see landscape paintings and photography by three very different artists looking at North Norfolk and elsewhere – James Cockburn, Fred Ingrams and Paddy Sutton.

All three work outside on the ground, under the sky, in the air and conditions of the places they are capturing.

“There’s a real experience behind each of my paintings,” says Fred Ingrams, who is the eldest son of Private Eye founder Richard Ingrams. “They say I have stood in this landscape, been bitten alive by midges, drenched by massive storm clouds. You can’t fake it.” Fred has spent fifteen years painting the Fens, North Norfolk and more recently the Flow Country of Caithness and Sutherland. Fred’s work connects him with the deep history of the landscapes he paints – the strange stories and myths of places that exist on the outside of a world beyond the horizon. Spending time in these fragile ecosystems he also sees how threatened they are – by natural processes or well-meant schemes, from crumbling coastlines to drainage to conifer plantations to massive wind farms encroaching into a pristine wilderness.
